Yen

The yen (Japanese: ?, “en”) is the currency of Japan. The yen is abbreviated as ¥ in Latin writing, the Japanese use the kanji ?.

The coins consist of one, five, ten, 50, 100 and 500 yen. Furthermore, there are banknotes of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 yen and the rarely used banknote of 2,000 yen.

Due to the importance of the Japanese economy, the yen is one of the most important currencies in the world.

It might be difficult to talk about large amounts of money with a Japanese, as the way of counting in Europe and Japan differs. Whereas one in Europe talks in thousands and millions (three numbers at a time), Japanese think in groups of four (myriads). If someone talks about ten million yen, the Japanese would first need to translate this to 1,000 times 10,000 yen (or 1,000??) before they can get a feeling about the amount of money.

Japanese Yen is one of the major currencies.
